For the adult child who lives far away

Four visits a year for the small things that trip people up

You can't be in Rochester every season. Nilda Escalera, a certified aging-in-place specialist, walks your parent's house each quarter, fixes what a handyman can fix on the spot, and writes you a short report.

  • One visit for each season
  • A written report afterward
  • Your parent chooses what we look at

The year in four visits

One visit for each season, timed to what Rochester does to a house

Winter ice, spring heaving, summer swelling, fall darkness. Each visit has its own list, so nothing waits a year.

  • Winter visit

Hall lights, entry traction, alarm batteries, indoor rails.

    Dec-Feb

  • Spring visit

Porch and steps after the freeze, loose rails, window locks.

    Mar-May

  • Summer visit

Bath bars re-anchored, sticking doors, cords and fans.

    Jun-Aug

  • Fall visit

Rails and lights before the first snow, drafty doors.

    Sep-Nov

At the door

Who comes, and what they do

A stranger at a parent's door is a fair worry. This is how a visit is run, every time.

  • Sabina calls your parent the day before to confirm the time.

  • Two of us come, the same two when we can, and we carry photo ID.

  • We take our shoes off or wear covers, and ask before we move anything.

  • Your parent says what to look at and what to leave alone.

  • Afterward, with your parent's okay, you get the report.

How it is billed

One plan, billed a visit at a time

Nothing is paid ahead. Each visit is invoiced when it is done, and you can stop any time before the next one is booked.

  • One safety visit

A single walk-through with a written list, for a house you have not seen in a while.

    • Up to 90 minutes, two people
    • Small fixes on the day
    • Written report with photos
    • Seasonal checklist
    • A booked slot every season
    Term:
One visit, invoiced when it is done.
  • Quarterly plan

    The plan most families choose

One visit each season, invoiced at each visit.

    • Up to 90 minutes, two people
    • Small fixes on the day
    • Written report with photos
    • Seasonal checklist
    • A booked slot every season
    Term:
Four visits a year, invoiced at each visit.
  • Quarterly plan with repairs

Three hours a visit, four visits a year, for a house with more to fix.

    • Up to 3 hours, two people
    • Small fixes on the day
    • Written report with photos
    • Seasonal checklist
    • A booked slot every season
    Term:

The price of a visit is agreed with you before it is booked. Parts such as a grab bar or a light fixture are added at what we paid. The plan is a set of scheduled visits, not insurance or a warranty. Cancel by text before the next visit is booked.

A gift card for a parent

Give a visit, not another sweater

Choose one visit or a full year of four. We send the card to you or to your parent, then call your parent to find a day that suits them.

What we look at

Four things we check in every house

Most falls start with something small: a loose rail, a dark hall, a door that sticks. We start there.

The four of us

Who comes to the door

A small firm, so your parent meets the same faces each season.

  • Nilda Escalera

    Owner and certified aging-in-place specialist

Leads every first visit, writes each report and answers the phone.

  • Casimir Pavlik

    Lead handyman

Railings, steps and anything that needs a saw.

  • Waldo Rosado

    Handyman

Grab bars, door hardware and bathroom fittings.

  • Sabina Ostrander

    Visit coordinator

Calls ahead, books each season and sends the report.

Sample comments

What families say after the first visit

“I live in Denver and my dad is in Irondequoit. The report had a photo of the second rail they put on the cellar stairs. I could finally stop asking him on the phone.”

Colleen R.Daughter

“They moved the bar in the shower to where my hand actually goes. Nilda asked me to show her how I step in before she picked the spot.”

Walt D.Penfield

“I gave my mother a year of visits for her birthday. She was cross for a day and now she keeps her own list for Nilda.”

Where we go

Rochester and the towns around it

Every visit is in Monroe County, so the same two people can come back each season without a long drive.

Rochester and the inner ring

  • Rochester
  • Irondequoit
  • Gates
  • East Rochester

West and south

  • Greece
  • Spencerport
  • Chili
  • Henrietta
  • Scottsville
  • Honeoye Falls

East

  • Pittsford
  • Penfield
  • Webster
  • Fairport

We don't go past the Monroe County line: not Buffalo, Syracuse, the Finger Lakes or Wayne County. If a parent lives farther out, we will say so on the first call and, if we can, suggest someone near them.

Questions

Questions families ask first

What happens on a quarterly visit?

We call the day before. Two of us come, walk the house with your parent and go through that season's list: stairs, rails, lighting, doors, the bathroom, rugs and cords. We fix what we can in the visit's time. Anything bigger goes on a short written list with your parent's say-so first.

Does my parent have to be home?

Yes for the first visit, so they can show us what bothers them. After that, if your parent prefers, the two of you can agree in writing on a key arrangement. We never come without a call first.

How is the plan billed, and how do I cancel?

The plan is billed at each visit, not in advance, and you can stop at any time by texting us before the next visit is booked. See the plan page for what each visit includes.

Is the plan insurance?

No. It is a set of scheduled visits. It is not insurance, a warranty or a service contract, and it does not cover the cost of repairing anything beyond the time and parts of a visit.

Do you tell me what you find?

Only with your parent's okay. If they agree, you get a short written report after each visit, with photos of anything we changed or recommend changing.

What won't you do?

Electrical wiring, plumbing and gas work, roof work, anything that needs a permit, and walls or structure. We name a licensed trade for those and can be there when they come.
